HARTNETT SEALS THE DEAL, WINS PENN CAN’S CLASH AT THE CAN OUTRIGHT

 

SUSQUEHANNA, PA…Kevin Hartnett was on a mission Sunday night and when the checkered flag flew it was mission accomplished as the 2015 Penn Can Speedway Track Champion raced to the win in the Clash at the Can for the Race of Champions Modifieds at Penn Can Speedway. Nick Nye, Kevin Ward, Shane Wolf, Jr. and Tim Vandermark were also victorious.

   Hartnett drew the pole for the 60 lap feature but slipped back a few spots at the outset as Tyler Dippel raced into the early lead. The caution flew on lap eight when Tyler Siri and Nick Petrilak got together in turn two. Six time Penn Can feature winner Dan Pompey was now in the runnerup spot as he tried to track down the high flying Dippel. Meanwhile Nick Rochinski was working his way through the field and by lap 15 took over second and mounted a challenge on Dippel.

   By the halfway point Dippel, Rochinski and Pompey were locked in a torrid three car battle for the lead. At that point Hartnett had moved to the top of the speedway and joined in on the battle for the lead. The last half of the race featured and amazing battle amongst the top five drivers with Stewart Friesen also joining in on the action.

   With ten laps to go Dippel found Rochinski on his inside and Hartnett up on the top as they were three wide for the lead, with Pompey and Friesen. The caution flag flew just as Hartnett was making his bid for the lead, relegating him to third on the restart. When the green flew again Rochinski changed lines and moved to the top, slowing down Hartnett’s progress. Hartnett moved up even further up the track and was able to wrestle second from Rochinski on lap 49. It then took just one lap to race past Dippel to grab the lead with ten laps to go.

   With Hartnett in command, positions two through six were swapped back and forth between Rochinski, Dippel, Pompey, Friesen and Mike Mahaney, who made a late race charge. Dippel began to fade while Pompey, Rochinski and Friesen all switched back and forth from second to fourth.

   Hartnett scored the $5,000 outright win, a year after finishing in a dead heat with Danny Johnson in last year’s event. Rochinski came home second ahead of Friesen, Pompey and Dippel, who passed Mahaney for fifth on the last lap. Danny Creeden was seventh with Brian Weaver, Danny Johnson and Joey Grammes rounding out the top ten.

   Hartnett was quick to point out how racey the track was. “The track was awesome. The bottom was good but when I went to the top the car really took off”, he said. Friesen also commented on how wide the racing groove was, allowing for three and a few time even four wide racing. “I have never been able to run this high on the track”, said Friesen.

   The Race of Champions Sportsman feature saw Kevin Jordan and Nick Nye lead the field to the green flag. Nye would chase Jordan for the first 18 laps with Brad Szulewski close behind in third. Nye was able to move past Jordan for the lead with 11 laps to go with Szulewski  following him into second on the next lap.

   Nye would go onto take the checkers ahead of Szulewski, Jordan, Mike Austin, who came from 17th, and Ryan Olsommer. Sixth through tenth went to Jim Pratt, Ken Hammond, Steve Davis, Randy Green and Charlie Hendrickson.

   The RoC Tripleheader also featured the Street Stocks. Jon Carpenter was behind the wheel of the Ryan Stone 67R and he wasted no time going from his fifth starting spot to the lead by lap two. By the midway point of the race Gene Sharpsteen had moved into second and was in pursuit of Carpenter.

   By the halfway point Carpenter maintained his lead over Sharpsteen, Bob Buono and Track Champ Shane Wolf, Jr., who was charging through the field. Wolf raced up to second with seven laps to go and then tracked down Carpenter.

   Wolf was now all over Carpenter for the lead and made contact with the leader with three laps to go. Carpenter held his line and Wolf worked hard on the outside to try to wrestle the lead away from him. With the white flag in the air Wolf chased Carpenter into turn three and made the winning pass coming out of four for the checkers.

   Carpenter settled for second ahead of Sharpsteen, Buono and Rich Green. Sixth through tenth went to Ray Lindquist, Doug Stack, Jr., Jeremy Williams, Dan Babcock and Rich Sharpsteen.

   The GRIT Series Sportsman feature found Chris Daugherty and Kevin Ward on the front row. Ward would jump out in front and held the top spot until Casey Pavlick raced into the lead on lap eight. At the same time Kyle Rohner moved into the battle for the lead, from his ninth starting spot.

   Pavlick’s lead was shortlived as Ward would move back ahead just two laps later. Those three drivers put on a great race for the lead. Ward opened up a slight advantage but the caution flew with five laps to go and bunched up the field. On the restart Pavlick was able to mount a serious challenge for the lead but Ward was up to the challenge and was able to hold him off for the victory.

   Pavlick came home second ahead of Rohner, Daugherty and Brian Mady. Positions six through ten went to Track Champ Chris Gennarelli, Rocky Warner, Pat Jordan, Brett Buono and Will Shields.

   The Four Cylinders closed out the night with their 20 lap feature that found Phil Burns leading early before relinquishing the lead to Nick Kennedy. Rich Wagner was able to move ahead of Kennedy for one lap after a great battle for the lead. Kennedy went back ahead a lap later with Wagner eventually dropping from the race.

   The last five laps found three drivers taking a share of the lead. Kennedy’s strong run came to an end when he broke with three laps left. That made Kenny Underwood the new leader ahead of Tim Vandermark and Tom Bumpus III, all the way from 18th. With two to go Underwood’s car began to spark and he slowed, allowing Vandermark to take the lead.

   Vandermark would score the win ahead of 14th starting Aaron Fuller, Bumpus, Josh Wilder and Ryan Wood. Sixth through tenth went to Logan Wiles, Cory Lewis, Jason Morrison, Laverne Conklin and Underwood.

   The next event at Penn Can will be the annual King of the Can Weekend, October 16th and 17th. Friday’s show features the Race of Champions Modifieds, GRIT Series Sportsman and Four Cylinders. On Saturday night the CRSA Sprint Cars will be joined by the Race of Champions Sportsman and Street Stocks along with IMCA Style Modifieds and Factory Stocks.
