NICK ROCHINSKI GRABS ‘CAN OPENER’ WIN AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

By Ryan Lepre

Susquehanna, PA…The twice delayed Penn Can Speedway Opener finally got in the record books on Friday night in Susquehanna, PA. The event sponsored by Don’s Automotive Mall saw Nick Rochinski of Dickson City, PA win the Modified main worth $1,500 for his first Penn Can victory. Ryan Olsommer led every lap of the 602 Sportsman event while Butch Green took the win in an exciting Street Stock main. Rounding out the winners Friday were Cody Brown in Factory Stocks and Don Doster Jr. in Four Cylinders.

Rochinski and Adam MacGeorge led the field to the green flag with Rochinski taking the lead. Three cautions in the first half a dozen laps slowed the pace but the feature went green to the finish from that point. Rochinski held the lead through all the restarts while Billy Thornton moved to second on lap seven with Joey Colsten, Joey Grammes and Alan Rudalavage the front five. As Rochinski pulled away from Thornton the best battle was for third between the Joeys, Grammes and Colsten. At lap 20 Rochinski was closing in on lapped traffic with the top ten now Thornton, Grammes, J.Colsten, Rudalavage, Dan Pompey, Mike Colsten, Mike Schane, Alex Stanton and Steve Babicek. Colsten and Grammes continued exchanging the third spot every few laps meanwhile Pompey worked past Rudalavage to claim fifth. With ten laps remaining Rochinski had heavy lapped traffic ahead and ¾ of a straightaway lead over Thornton. Five laps later the lead had evaporated and Thornton was within just a few car lengths. Over the final five laps Rochinski never opened the door for Thornton as he’d take the win in his Rochinski Enterprises No. 20R Murray powered Teo-Pro Car. Thornton of Old Forge, PA finished a strong second in the Dunn Raceway Park No.11 while Joey Colsten Of Binghamton, NY nabbed third in the Gary’s U-Pull-It No. 151. Pompey of Kingsley, PA grabbed fourth in the final couple circuits and Grammes of Leighton,PA was forced to settle for fifth. The rest of the top ten were Rudalavage, 16th starter Schane, Modified Rookie Stanton, Clapperton and Babicek.

The 602 Sportsman event was lead the entire distance by Ryan Olsommer in his No. 51Z. Olsommer held a steady lead throughout but following a late race restart Dusty Barton kept pace with Olsommer until the checkers. Olsommer was too strong as he won over Barton, Paul Rooney, Randy Gates who recovered from an early spin and Rookie Brian Mady.

The Street Stocks put on the best show of the night as no less than half a dozen cars were within striking distance of the lead at certain points in the event. Ryan Stone and Randy Fox battled for the lead early with Fox leading until lap ten when Stone pulled ahead and Butch Green followed into second. The top four were under a blanket as Stone led Green, Steve Deinhardt and Jon Carpenter. Green took over the lead with five to go while it was three wide for second. Stone was in the middle and washed up the track and made contact with Carpenter sending him spinning. Green went on to take the win while Stone held off Deinhardt for second. Shane Wolf Jr. placed fourth and Eric Boynton completed the top five.

In the Factory Stocks Eric Beach appeared to be headed for the win as he took the lead on lap six but in a green white checkered finish his right rear tire blew allowing race long runner up Cody Brown to slip by and take the win over Ted Mills Jr. and Nathan Hill.

A strong field of nineteen Four Cylinders Stocks were in competition on Friday night. Don Doster Jr. took the win in the closely contested event over Dylan Robinson and Frank Kennedy.
