POMPEY TAKES MODS, KRUMMEL TOPS CRSA, SCHANE, WOLF, PHILLIPS, WILLIAMS AND KENNEDY ALSO VICTORIOUS FRIDAY AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

SUSQUEHANNA, PA…Sometimes luck is on your side and sometimes it’s not. For Dan Pompey it was definitely on his side Friday night as he took the Modified feature win at Penn Can Speedway. Brian Krummel claimed the CRSA Sprint Car win with Mike Schane, Shane Wolf, Jr., Bud Phillips, Jeremy Williams and Frank Kennedy also victorious on the first Friday race of the season.
Pompey had his share of good and bad luck in 2015. He had motor issues and mechanical failures that caused several dnf’s but when he did finish it was usually in victory lane or close to it. He started off 2016 with motor problems in the opener which ended in a dnf . On Friday night he didn’t have the strongest car but Nick Petrilak and Joey Grammes’ misfortune worked in his favor.
Petrilak would jump out to the lead at the outset of the 30 lap Modified feature with Brad Szulewski hot on his heels. While those two drivers were setting a torrid pace trouble set in on lap five. There was a scuffle up front resulting in Szulewski sideways in three and four, collecting several cars in the process. That wreck ended Szulewski’s strong run as well as opening night winner Kevin Hartnett’s night.
When racing resumed it was Petrilak up front with Pompey second and a hard charging Grammes in third. Grammes hounded Pompey before racing past him on lap 21 and quickly pulling up to the back bumper of Petrilak. Disaster struck for the leader’s just one lap later. As they charged down the backstretch, Petrilak’s rear end locked up as Grammes was making a bid for the lead. With a full head of steam, Grammes couldn’t avoid the slowing Petrilak and the two drivers came to a stop in turn three.
Pompey inherited the lead and held off Alan Rudalavage for the win. Brian Malcolm and Nick Rochinski, who were caught up in the lap five wreck, made strong recoveries to finish third and fourth ahead of rookie Ryan Olsommer. Sixth through tenth went to Mike Dougherty, Grammes, who was flying back to the front, Joey Colsten, tom McGurrin and Ryan Grim.
In victory lane Pompey acknowledged his good fortune, “I don’t like winning this way but I will take it. We had a good car and tonight things went our way”.
The CRSA Sprint Cars made their first of three appearances on the season and put on a great show. Kyle Smith and Dana Wagner led the way with Smith holding the advantage early. While Smith and Wagner staged a hard fought battle for the lead, Brian Krummel and Eddie Strada were working through the pack in a battle of their own.
Late in the race Wagner got a great run off of turn two and pulled alongside Smith for the lead. The two leaders made contact resulting in Wagner spinning in turn three, collecting several cars including Thomas Radivoy who flopped his car on its side. That brought out a red flag and moved Strada, Krummel and Scott Goodrich into the mix.
Just before the race went green Smith dropped into the pits, relinquishing the lead. Krummel was able to outdual Strada for the win with Goodrich coming home third ahead of Josh Flint and Brett Jaycox. Sixth through tenth went to Johnny Smith, Emily VanInwegen, Mike Kiser, Dalton Herrick and Wagner.
After a year off, former Modified driver Mike Schane returned to the racing wars behind the wheel of a 602 Crate Sportsman. Opening night winner Marty Bunker raced out to the early lead. Schane hounded Bunker for the first half of the race before making the pass for the lead at the halfway point.
Once out in front Schane cruised to his first Penn Can feature win. Bunker was second ahead of Eric Bonham, Dusty Barton and Devon Zona. Positions six through ten went to Paul Rooney, Ryan Stone, Adam MacGeorge, Randy Fox and Nick Branning.
The luck of the draw found defending Street Stock Track Champ Shane Wolf, Jr. on the pole and he would go wire to wire to capture his first win of the season. He was followed to the stripe by Ryan Codington, Ricky Davis, Sr. Dan Force and Jason Neyra.
Bud Phillips took his second straight Crate Late Model feature win. He beat out Jim O’Hara and Jamie Bedford to claim the win.
The Factory Stock feature was much like the Street Stock feature in that defending Track Champ Jeremy Williams drew the pole and went unchallenged to collect his second consecutive win. He was followed by Kris Shimer, Jason Travis, Jason Rinker and Ken Washburn.
Frank Kennedy out ran his brother Nick Kennedy to claim the Four Cylinder Stock feature win. Casey MacPherson was third ahead of Chirs Taylor and Josh Wilder.
