DAN POMPEY RECORDS 5th WIN AT PENN CAN. TITUS, CARPENTER, WILLIAMS, AND KENNEDY ALSO WINNERS.

By Tyler Harpell

SUSQUEHANNA, PA… For the fifth time in 2015 Dan Pompey parked his number 11 Modified in victory lane at the Penn Can Speedway on Rob’s Market night. After a hard fought battle with Brian Weaver, Pompey was able to take over the lead in the closing stages of the 30 lap main event en route to the victory. Todd Titus picked up his first win of the season as he drove to victory in the 602 Crate Sportsman 20 lap feature. Jon Carpenter returned to the speedway for the first time this year and found his way to victory lane in the Street Stock main event. Jeremy Williams made it two in a row in the Factory Stock division with Nick Kennedy recording his first win of the season in the 4 Cylinder feature.

Bob Trapper and Frank Porreca brought the Modified field to the green flag with Porreca taking command of the race on the outside of the speedway. Porreca held onto the lead for the opening 5 circuits but battled an ill handling race car in the early stages. Bob Trapper was able to race past Porreca on lap 6 to claim the lead as Porreca developed a push.  Meanwhile Brian Weaver quickly moved into second as he was able to get by Porreca. Trapper would lead the next few laps until Weaver found the quick way around the speedway and made a pass for the lead on lap 9.  The first caution flag would fly on lap 11 and would mark the end of a great night for Bob Trapper’s number 69. At this point Weaver continued to lead with young Bobby Trapper now moving into second with Nick Petrilak, Brian Malcolm, and Porreca completing the top 5.

Brian Weaver would restart on the bottom of the speedway with Trapper alongside. Trapper was able to take the lead as the pack raced into turn one. The caution flag would again fly on lap 12 with Trapper the new race leader. On the ensuing restart Weaver was able to again reclaim the advantage. By the halfway point of the race, Dan Pompey had cracked into the top three from 11th on the starting grid. As the race continued, Weaver maintained the advantage but Pompey quickly began to close in and challenge for the race lead. By lap 18 the top two began to trade paint as they battled for the lead. Weaver then switched lanes to protect the inside as Pompey began to show his nose. On lap 22 Pompey was able to take the lead from Weaver on a pass that was deemed rough riding. Weaver slid back into second but would reclaim the lead after the penalty was assessed to Pompey on the lap 25 caution. On the ensuing restart Weaver led the field to the green and took to the inside of the track. Pompey was then forced to the outside but found speed in the middle groove of the track. Pompey reclaimed the lead on lap 27 and quickly opened up his advantage in the immediate laps to follow. As the field received the checkered flag it was Pompey in for his fifth win of the season. He was followed to the line by Weaver, Bobby Trapper, Kevin Hartnett, and Nick Petrilak.

In the Sportsman 20 lap feature, rookie driver Devon Zona took the initial race lead from his pole starting spot. Zona would lead the opening 4 circuits of the race until Todd Titus raced up from third on the starting grid to take the lead on the outside of the track. Titus was then able to open up a sizeable advantage over the field in the immediate laps to follow. Zona moved back to second with Ryan Olsommer moving into the third position. Titus continued to set the pace and maintain a three to four car length advantage in the late stages of the race. Great battling took place behind the leader for positions two and three. In the closing laps, Titus was able to keep the field behind him en route to his first win of the season. Olsommer, Zona, Matt Brewer, and Dusty Barton compoleted the top 5.

In the Street Stock feature, Randy Fox jumped out to the lead from the outside of the front row. Fox set the pace for the first 5 laps until Jon Carpenter made his way to the front in his first start of 2015. Lap 6 would see Carpenter the new race leader. A lap 10 caution would end the night for points leader Shane Wolf Jr as he suffered significant rear end damage after an incident on the back straightaway. Ray Lindquist quickly moved into second by the second half of the race and looked to close in on leader Jon Carpenter. The last 10 laps of the race would go caution free and Carpenter was bale to maintain a three car length lead over the strong running 22l of Lindquist. In the closing laps Earl Zimmer, and Ryan Stone were able to work around Lindquist for positions two and three. Carpenter held on for the win and was followed to the line by Zimmer, Stone, Lindquist, and Fox completing the top 5.

Jeremy Williams raced his way to his second consecutive win in the Factory Stock main event. Williams took the lead following a lap 5 restart and was able to open up his lead in the laps to follow. Williams held on for an emotional victory just one week after his racing idol Rod Hunsinger tragically lost his life.

Nick Kennedy led wire to wire as he claimed his first feature win of the season in the 4 Cylinder main event. The 4 cylinders again did a great job going green to checker. Kennedy was able to hold off the challenges of Josh Wilder in the early stages of the 15 lap main event. Wilder suffered mechanical problems on lap 12, which would end his chance at the win.
