DAN POMPEY WINS EXCITING PENN CAN MODIFIED FEATURE…OLSOMMER, WOLF JR, B. MILL JR, UNDERWOOD, AND EASTMAN ALSO WIN

Susquehanna, PA…After a disappointing 2013 season without a win at Penn Can Speedway, Dan Pompey of Kingsley, PA, only had to wait three races to visit Victory Lane for the first time in over two seasons. The thrilling win came in a very hotly contested battle over Joey Grammes and Nick Rochinski. Ryan Olsommer of Canadensis, PA repeated his opening night win in the 602 sportsman division while Shane Wolf Jr of Susquehanna, Pa won in the street stocks. Buck Mills Jr of Newark Valley, NY was the factory stock winner with Kenny Underwood of Tunkhannock, PA winning in the four cylinders. Will Eastman of Unidilla, NY came home first in the Xcel 600 modifieds.

Brian Malcolm led the modified field to start the thirty lap feature and jumped out to an early lead with Mike Clapperton, and Joey Grammes tucked in on his rear bumper. The pace was quick with two and three wide action throughout the field. At the ten lap mark Malcolm had established a sizable lead over Grammes, Clapperton, and Alex Stanton. The cars on the move during the mid portion of the race, being run caution free, were the tenth starting Dan Pompey machine followed closely in tow by current point leader Nick Rochinski. At the half way point of the race Malcolm seemed to have the race under control leading Grammes, Pompey, Clapperton, Rockinski, Stanton, and Kevin Hartnett. The action really started to heat up as the cars started making their way through lapped traffic. With Pompey and Grammes fighting for the runner-up position, Malcolm’s car sputtered coming down the back stretch. Pompey went high with Grammes going low. Malcohm’s car came back to life for a lap or two making it a very intense three way battle for the top spot. The first caution flew on lap twenty four when Malcolm’s car came to a stop giving the lead to Pompey. With the green back out Pompey and Grammes raced side by side with Rochinski and Hartnett following. Pompey held on to claim his first win in over two seasons. Grammes, Rochinski, Hartnett, and Clapperton completed the top five.

Rookie Alec Genneralli raced out to an early lead in the 602 sportsman feature. The first year driver lead the first half of the caution free feature until being caught and passed by opening night winner Ryan Olsommer. Once in front Olsommer kept control and held off the challenges of Paul Rooney over the last five laps. Olsommer came home with the win followed by Rooney, last race winner Dusty Barton, Nick Mady, and Gennarelli.

In one of the most exciting features of the evening local hometown favorite, Shane Wolf Jr took his first win of the season in the street stock division. Wolf’s win did not come without challenges. The race was a constant battle between Wolf Jr, Ryan Stone, Steve Deinhardt, Randy Fox, and Butch Green.

The factory stock feature became a family affair with Buck Mils Jr winning for his first time ever at Penn Can over Buck Mills Sr. Last race winner Eric Beach was third followed by Mike Morse, and Ted Mills Jr.

2013 four cylinder champion Kenny Underwood returned to Victory Lane at the speedway for the first time this season. Underwood’s win was an exciting one taking the lead in a fierce battle with Mike Robinson. Andy Brigham came home third followed by Dylan Robinson and Dan Dryden in another caution free feature.

Will Eastman was the Xcel modified winner in another close battle over Kyle Fallis, Tim Frantz, John Ayre, Scott Adams, and Jamie Frantz.

PENN NOTES: Dan Pompey’s win was his first since the 2012 season. He dedicated the win to his young son in Victory Lane. Once again the track conditions were excellent for side by side racing with two of the features going caution free. Next Friday the CRSA Sprints make their first of three visits to Penn Can in 2014. Another strong field of four cylinders signed into the pits and put on an excellent caution free feature race. Brian Malcolm’s luck over the last two races has been nothing but terrible as he had two strong runs end early with mechanical failure. Preparations are underway for the huge Clash at the Can scheduled for Tuesday June 10th. Ken Titus was the American Racer Tire winner with Chuck Murray winning the Trackside Products/Lias Tire street stock tire give-away.
