After eight different drivers visiting Penn Can Speedway’s victory lane in eight races, Alan Rudalavage finally broke the streak Friday night becoming the first repeat winner in the Modified feature. Dusty Barton, Shane Wolfe, Jr., Bud Phillips, Randy Fox and Frank Kennedy also raced to victories on Friday night.
Mike Dougherty blasted out to the early lead in the Modified feature with Frank Porreca following close behind. Dougherty was hooked up and flying and looked as though he may claim his first Penn Can Modified feture win. Unfortunately for Dougherty the only caution of the race came on lap 15 for a spinning Dan Morden. As that was happening Dougherty began to slow in turn three and pulled off the track.
That gave the lead to Porreca, who has had a difficult season up to this point. During the week they took the car to HigFab to have them go through it and get it dialed in. It worked as Porreca won his heat and now had the lead in the feature. Meanwhile Rudalavage overcame a heat race crash to charge to the runnerup spot with 12 laps to go.
Rudalavage hounded Porreca for a couple of laps using the bottom of the speedway. With nine to go Rudalavage dove to the inside of Porreca in turns three and four to take the lead. Once in front he never looked back and scored his second win of the season. Porreca had a strong second place showing.
Joey Colsten, who is chasing Rudalavage in the point standings, had another strong run finishing third just ahead of his father Mike Colsten, who fought off Joey Grammes for fourth. Sixth through tenth went to Brian Malcolm, Nick Rochinski, Ryan Olsommer, Mike Loney and Brad Szulewski.
Dusty Barton held off a hard charging Paul Rooney to claim his second Crate Sportsman feature win of the season. Barton was challenged early by Moose Gulley but it was Rooney who was on the move from his eighth starting spot. Barton held a comfortable lead but when Rooney got past Gulley at the halfway point he started to chase him down.
With two laps to go Rooney was able to pull alongside Barton. Barton kept his composure and continued to run his line as Rooney tried to get past him. Barton took the white flag still in front and was able to fend off the determined Rooney to capture the win. Rooney was second ahead of Gulley, Josh Mudge and Mike Schane.
In the Street Stock feature it looked as though Ricky Davis, Sr. would capture back to back wins. While he was out in front Ryan Codington was hooked up in a torrid battle with Shane Wolf, Jr. for second. That allowed Davis to stretch his advantage. Wolf was able to move past Codington for second with six laps to go but Davis had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead.
Wolf got the break he needed when Chris Groover spun with three laps to go to bring out the caution. Davis still looked strong as he maintained his advantage over Wolf. Davis would lead at the drop of the white flag but Wolf was all over him at this point. As the leaders went into turn three Davis went in low and Wolf went in high. Davis drifted up the track and Wolf darted to the inside. They then drag raced to the checkers with Wolf winning by inches over Davis. Codington came home third ahead of Matt Spencer and Tom Groover.
Bud Phillips romped to his eighth Crate Late Model feature win in commanding fashion. He was chased to the stripe by Jim O’Hara, Jamie Bedford and Al Whitaker.
The Factory Stock feature started out a real barnburner as Jason Travis, Josh Towner and Randy Fox had an amazing three car battle going for the lead. The battled ended with five laps to go when Towner and Travis came together in turn three sending both cars spinning.
Fox then inherited the lead and held off late charges by Kris Shimer and Jeremy Williams for the win. Shimer and Williams came home in that order ahead of Jason Rinker and Randy Kelley.
Once again the Four Cylinder feature was a battle of brothers between Nick and Frank Kennedy. This one had an epic finish. Nick grabbed the lead and was flying on the high side. Frank moved into second and started to chase down his brother in the closing laps.
On the final lap Nick Kennedy slid up a little too high in turn two and opening the door for Frank Kennedy to take advantage of it. They ran side by side down the backstretch, into turn three, out of turn four and stayed that way to the line with Frank just nipping Nick for the win by inches. Rick Lunn ran a strong third ahead of Chris Taylor and Don Doster, Jr.
The twice postponed Fireworks Extravaganza was finally presented. Vibrant Thunder Fireworks put on another amazing show for the fans.
